The award-winning documentary of 90s indie rock impresario Billy Ruane

The Road to Ruane is a man vs. himself study of Billy Ruane set mostly in the rising indie music scene of the 90s, told by his friends, family, teachers, and the many indie artists that Billy championed. The film utilizes many sources and devices in its storytelling, including an extensive video archive, interviews, animation, illustrations, and vérité. Interviews were conducted using handheld cameras to add intimacy with the subjects.

Our Mission

After an amazing sold-out premiere at IFFBoston in 2024 and a successful festival run, The Road to Ruane is seeking donations for a self-release so we can share the film with a wide audience. Our festival licenses for music will expire on May 3, 2025, and we need funds to acquire worldwide licensing rights, marketing, and to cover outstanding debts in the making of the film.
We have several exciting offers to screen the documentary in theaters outside of festivals later this year including: The Brattle in Cambridge (one of Billy's favorites), Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Vidiots Theater in Los Angeles, Zoetropolis in Pennsylvania, and more to come! We hope to host annual screenings in Cambridge at The Middle East and Brattle for what will surely become a cult film.

We then plan to make the film available to stream on Amazon, Apple, Kanopy, and Hit Parader.
It's been a very difficult time for the entertainment industry. Studios are shuttering, streaming services are merging, and companies have largely stopped acquiring new films. Many amazing films that have premiered at top festivals over the past two years are still looking for homes. We are still pursuing an acquisition, but there are no guarantees that will happen. Please donate to keep this story alive. We are set up with the non-profit organization From the Heart Productions. All donations are tax dedcutible. The link below will take you to the PayPal they've set up for us. You can also make a donation by check, please email below for more info. Thank you for your support!
